Veterans Service Office
The Clairmont County Veterans Service Office (CVSO) assists veterans, their dependents, and survivors in obtaining benefits earned through military service, as authorized under ORC Chapter 5901. The office is staffed by County Veterans Service Officer Earl Jividen, an accredited service officer who represents claimants before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at no charge.

Benefits Assistance
The office helps veterans and eligible dependents file claims for VA disability compensation, pension, survivor benefits (DIC), education benefits, and health care enrollment. Mr. Jividen can assist with gathering service records, completing required VA forms, and tracking the status of a pending claim. Appointments are recommended and may be scheduled by calling the office; walk-ins are seen as time allows.
Discharge Records
Veterans and their families are encouraged to record a copy of their DD-214 discharge document with the County Recorder at no charge. A recorded copy on file with the county can speed future benefit claims and burial arrangements, and recorded discharge records are kept confidential from public view.
Medical Transportation
The office coordinates a volunteer medical transport van for veterans traveling to VA medical appointments at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center and the Columbus VA outpatient clinic. Rides must be scheduled at least one week in advance and are provided on a space-available basis; priority is given to veterans without other means of transportation. There is no charge for transport, though donations to support the program are accepted.
Emergency Financial Assistance
Limited county funds are available to assist honorably discharged veterans and their dependents facing a temporary financial hardship, such as help with rent, utilities, or essential household needs, subject to eligibility guidelines set by the Veterans Service Commission. Applicants should bring proof of the hardship and current household income documentation to their appointment.
Burial & Memorial Benefits
The office assists surviving family members with applications for VA burial benefits, military honors requests, and headstone or marker applications for veterans’ graves in county cemeteries. Funeral homes throughout the county are familiar with this process and often coordinate directly with this office on a family’s behalf.
